Colombo Flights Guide
The biggest city in Sri Lanka and its major port and capital, Colombo is a sprawling, bustling place stretching along the coast close to some of the island's most popular holiday destinations including Kandy in the central Highlands and Galle on the south coast. This city, which is Sri Lanka's cultural and economic centre, is the base from which to explore the island's many treasures, including its Colonial heritage, find dining and shopping, as well as the resort facilities on offer.
Comprising all the cultures and personalities that live in this fascinating country, Colombo is a microcosm of Sri Lanka, with its bustling markets, lush gardens and charming old buildings, some humble, some majestic, not to mention the pretty little beachfront area. For beautiful beaches, head for the closest beach resort to the city, Mount Lavinia, 10km away.
The city centres around Galle Road, a hectic, busy stretch of road that is lined with modern buildings, and stretches from the Fort parallel with the coast to the city's suburbs further inland all the way to Galle in the south. Fort is the city's historic hub, now the CBD, and it's filled with modern office blocks, shops and government buildings as well as some beautiful old structures that date from the Dutch, Portuguese and British Colonial periods.
To the east of the Fort district one finds the intoxicating Pettah bazaar area. Here, the streets are full of shops and stalls selling everything imaginable from fresh vegetables to magnificent gemstones. As you head southwards you'll find Galle Face Green, an open area where city residents enjoy a variety of sports activities, from kite flying to cricket games and strolling along at sunset.
Beyond Galle Face Green you'll find neighbourhood of Cinnamon Gardens, home to majestic mansions, treelined streets and the lush Viharamaha Devi park.
