Atlanta Flights Guide
This sprawling metropolis in the northern part of Georgia is a showcase of the South, and offers a variety of world-class restaurants and shops, a festive nightlife and lots of cultural attractions and events. Atlanta is a vibrant place, with lots of reminders of days gone by - for instance, it's the birthplace of civil rights leader, Martin Luther King.
The downtown Peachtree Centre is a pedestrianised precinct covering 14 blocks and comprises lots of shops and restaurants, three huge hotels and a number of office towers. It's also home to some excellent museums and galleries as well as the largest aquarium in the world - and it's the centre of America's favourite sport, baseball. The world-wide cable news network, CNN, also has its headquarters in Atlanta.
The centre of the city is called Five Points, in the downtown area. Here you'll find Underground Atlanta, a historical shopping area that is built under viaducts that support the streets of the city. In the 1920s it was home to many illegal speakeasies; today it's the centre of the city's vibrant nightlife and is full of bars and nightclubs.
Nearby is the bohemian district called Little Five Points, which is home to indie radio stations, local cafes and a number of independent music labels. Then there's the elite suburb of Buckhead where many of the city's best designer shops are found along Peachtree Street and in Lenox Square Shopping Mall.
In between Downtown and Buckhead is Midtown Atlanta, home to some cultural sights, including the Fox Theatre, Woodruff Arts Centre and Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is located 16km south of downtown Atlanta. It's one of the busiest airports in the country, serving more than 89 million passengers annually.
