Information on BMI

BMI began commercial flights in 1949, known then as Derby Aviation. The airline name became known as British Midland before being renamed to BMI in 2002. BMI was the first airline to offer a system of booking and paying for tickets over the internet, introducing this in 1995. BMI is the second largest operator at London Heathrow, from where it flies across the UK, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The airline also flies to North America and the Caribbean from Manchester airport. BMI is a member of the Star Alliance group.

BMI offers business, premium economy and economy cabins on its key business routes and long-haul flights. On other domestic and European flights, there is a single-class cabin. All BMI flights offer a free checked baggage allowance. BMI is currently in the process of fitting out its long haul aircraft with flat beds in business class.

BMI operates a frequent flyer programme called Diamond Club. Points are accumulated through flying with BMI and making bookings with their partners. The scheme offers four levels of membership – Blue, Blue plus, Silver and Gold. All levels earn free flights, with additional benefits for Silver and Gold members, including lounge access and an increased baggage allowance. Gold also offers four complimentary upgrades a year. BMI also operates a reward programme called Highflyers, for PAs and secretaries who are arranging travel. Blue and Gold membership levels are available and discounts are offered on flights and purchases with other selected partners.
