Vilamoura is a purpose-built tourist and leisure resort on Portugal’s Algarve. It covers an area of around 2,000 hectares and offers a massive choice of facilities and accommodation to visitors.
Attractions
Marina
The centrepiece of Vilamoura is its magnificent marina, which has capacity for around 1,000 vessels. The marina is surrounded by cafes and restaurants which offer outdoor seating that allows for views of the marina and all its activities.
The marina is the starting point for many watersports activities, such as waterski-ing, jet-skiing and sailing. Boats are available to hire for those interested in fishing. Trips are also available to other destinations along the coast, such as Lagos.
Golf
Vilamoura has many golf courses which are of a very high standard. It is a popular destination for visitors wishing to enjoy a round of golf on their holiday. The Old Course in Vilamoura is the second oldest course on the Algarve. Other courses in the area include the Millennium Course, which is an 18 hole course and the Laguna course. The golf course at Pinhal has fantastic sea views, making it a particularly enjoyable course to play on.
Beaches
There are numerous beaches on the Algarve, many within a short distance of Vilamoura. Vilamoura has a sandy beach which is popular with watersports enthusiasts such as windsurfers. Praia da Falesia is one of the longest beaches in Portugal and stretches from Vilamoura to Olhos d’Agua. It has beautiful red cliffs backing the beach, making it a spectacular place to visit.
Entertainment
As you would expect from a purpose built resort, there is no shortage of entertainment options in Vilamoura. A large shopping centre offers everything from items for the beach to designer boutiques. There are nightclubs, bars and restaurants to suit all tastes.
The Casino in Vilamoura is a very popular destination. There are numerous gaming machines and tables, with games such as blackjack and poker available. The Casino also has a restaurant and bar, and a disco for later in the evening.
Culture
Vilamoura has some impressive Roman ruins, situated close to the marina. The “Cerro da Vila” is well worth a visit, and a visitor centre gives an idea of what life may have been like in Roman times. There are also larger Roman ruins at Milreu, close to Estoi, which show a Roman farm. These ruins have the status of national monument.
How to get there
The main airport on the Algarve is at Faro, a short drive away from Vilamoura. Faro is well served by airlines from the UK, with both charter and scheduled flights available. Ryanair fly to Faro from London Stansted, with Easyjet flying from London Luton, as do Monarch Airlines. British Airways and TAP Portugal both fly to Faro from London. Flight time from London to Faro is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes.
