Val d’Isere is a well known ski resort in France, situated only a couple of miles from the Italian border in the French department of Savoy.  It played host to the 2009 World Ski Championships and has numerous piste runs, as well as plentiful off piste skiing within the Espace Killy ski-ing area.  The resort is made up of several little villages, including La Daille, Le Fornet, Le Laisinant and Le Cret, many of which have beautiful chalets available for rent. 

Winter in Val d’Isere

The ski season in Val d’Isere runs from December to April each year.  The ski slopes cater for all ski-ers from beginners to advanced ski-ers wishing to go off-piste, and has good snow coverage.  For those who wish to improve their ski-ing skills, there are numerous ski schools offering tuition, including Oxygene and Ecole du Ski Francais. 

There is a wonderful snow park, accessible by mountain railway or cable car, which offers jumps and an opportunity to watch freestyle ski-ers.  There is also a recreational area, which has facilities including a BBQ.  Other winter sports available in Val d’Isere include ice skating, ice climbing, snow shoe hiking and riding on husky sleighs. 

A free shuttle bus is available for both ski-ers and pedestrians, linking the villages of Val d’Isere.

Summer in Val d’Isere

During the summer months, Val d’Isere is transformed into an outdoor lovers paradise, with spectacular scenery all around.  The lift system, used for ski-ing in winter, enables visitors to rapidly scale the surrounding mountains and obtain magnificent views of the surrounding area.  Hiking and walking are very popular activities, along with guided tours of the two local glaciers, Grand Motte and Pissaillas. 

Other summer activities in Val d’Isere include quad biking, canyoning, paragliding, helicopter tours of the area and golf at the local course at Tignes.  For children, a popular trip is to the Femme de l’Adroit, where they can pat the animals and learn how cheese is made.

Chambery Airport is the closest airport to Val d’Isere, and Flybe and Jet2 fly to Chambery from various airports in the UK.  Another airport close to Val d’Isere is the airport at Geneva.  Easyjet offer flights to Geneva from airports including London Gatwick, Bristol and Edinburgh. Other airlines flying to Geneva include British Airways and bmi.
