Toulouse is the capital of the Midi-Pyrenees region of France, and is situated in the south-western corner of the country. It is sometimes known as ‘Ville Rose’ due to the pink colour of much of its architecture. Toulouse is built on the banks of the River Garonne, and the Canal du Midi and Canal de Garonne both pass through the city.

Saint-Sermin Basilica
The Saint-Sermin Basilica is a magnificent structure that was built around the end of the 11th Century. The five tier bell tower can be seen from across Toulouse, and the Cavaille-Coll Pipe Organ is recognised as one of the most important organs in France. Entry to the Basilica is free, although there is a small cover charge for entrance to the Ambulatory and the Crypt.
Capitole
The Capitole is a beautiful building, with a facade that is dominated by its eight striking pink marble columns. It dominates the Place du Capitole. The building now houses the Town Hall and there are often art exhibitions held there. Entrance to the Capitole is free, and it is open from Monday to Saturday, and on the first Sunday of every month.
Canal du Midi
The Canal du Midi is one of the oldest canals in France, being built during the 17th Century, and is now World Heritage listed. It is possible to hire small boats to independently explore the waterway, or alternatively to walk along its towpaths.
Museums
There are numerous museums in Toulouse, covering a variety of subjects from the history of Medical Instruments to graphic arts. The Old Toulouse Museum showcases the history of the city, while the Toulouse Museum covers natural history. The Abattoirs is an art gallery showing modern and contemporary art. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Tourist Train
There is a tourist train running around the centre of Toulouse, offering an easy way to see some of the major sights. The tour takes around 35 minutes and includes a commentary.
How to get there
The international airport in Toulouse is called Toulouse Blagnac Airport. It is around 5 miles north of the city of Toulouse. Several airlines offer flights to Toulouse from the UK, including British Airways from London and Easyjet from Bristol. Other airlines offering flights include bmibaby, Jet2 and Flybe.
