Toulon is situated in the South of France, on the Mediterranean Coast in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur. The capital of the Var department, Toulon is also a major base for the French Navy. Toulon has an enviable climate, with very little rain and sunshine for more days per year than most other places in France.

Mount Faron
Mount Faron provides a dramatic backdrop to the city of Toulon. The summit of Mount Faron can be reached on a cable car ride. At the summit, there is a zoo and a memorial commemorating the Allied landings. Spectacular views across the Bay of Toulon and the city make the trip up the mountain a special experience.
Museums
There are many museums to visit in Toulon. One of the most popular is the Musee National de la Marine, showcasing the history of the French navy in the area. The Musee du Vieux Toulon gives an insight into the growth of the city. Other museums include several art galleries and a large Natural History Museum.
Old Town
The Old Town (or Lower Town) area of Toulon is full of pedestrianised areas and little squares. The Provencal Market is held daily (except Mondays) on the Cours Lafayette and attracts people from across a vast area to its produce. Toulon Cathedral is also situated in the Old Town area. There are many cafes and restaurants in the Old Town, with people watching whilst enjoying a cup of coffee a popular pastime.
Upper Town
The Upper Town area of Toulon is a newer part of the city and is in total contrast to the narrow streets of the Old Town. The impressive architecture in the Upper Town includes the Toulon Opera House, which was built in 1850.
The Mourillon
The Mourillon is the beachside village in the city of Toulon. There is a beautiful promenade, lined with a vast choice of bars and restaurants. Botanical Gardens and popular markets also add to the charm of this area.
Tourist Train
The Tourist Train in Toulon connects the Old Town with the beaches at the Mourillon, with the ride taking around 30 minutes.
How to get there
Toulon has its own aiport, called Toulon-Hyeres. The only direct flights from the UK are operated by Ryanair, who fly to Toulon from London Stansted and Bristol (flights are not available all year round). Flights are also available with Air France, travelling via Paris.
