Santa Maria is one of the Portugese Azores Islands.  Other islands making up the Azores include Sao Jorge Island, Flores Island, Corvo Island and Sao Miguel Island.  Santa Maria is one of the oldest islands, and is also the third smallest and southernmost.

Beaches

Santa Maria has many beautiful beaches, including long sandy beaches and small inlets that offer privacy.  Praia Formosa is one of the largest beaches and is very popular with visitors.  Its island location also means that the area is very popular for watersports such as yachting and windsurfing. 

Historical Attractions

Santa Maria has many beautiful old buildings which are well worth exploring while on the island.  These include the Sao Bras Fort, Our Lady of Purification Church and the Convent of Saint Francis.  In the village of Anjos, there is a statue of Christopher Columbus, commemorating his visit there whilst returning from America. 

Outdoors

The highest point on the island is the Pico Alto mountain.  It is well worth climbing up Pico Alto to see the fabulous views across the island.  There are many other beautiful walks on the island.  Whale watching tours are available between May and October, although the whales are around the island all year.

Sao Miguel

Visitors to Santa Maria often combine their visit with a trip to Sao Miguel, where geysers and hot springs are a common sight.  The capital of Sao Miguel is Ponta Delgada. 

How to get there

Santa Maria can be reached by plane from the island of Sao Miguel.  The plane trip takes approximately 15 minutes and takes in some wonderful scenery.  For those with time to spare, a ferry service operates during the summer months, taking approximately four hours to get from one island to the other. 

To reach Sao Miguel, flights are available via Lisbon.  The flight from Lisbon to Sao Miguel takes approximately 2 hours.  TAP Air Portugal also fly direct from London to the airport at Ponta Delgada. www.azores.com
