Pau is a town in the French region of Aquitaine, located around 40 miles from the border with Spain.  Its location makes it an ideal base for exploring around the beautiful Pyrenees.  It is a regular stage on the Tour de France.  The people of Pau are known as Palois.

Boulevard des Pyrenees

The Boulevard des Pyrenees runs between the Chateau de Pau and the Parc du Beaumont and is approximately a mile in length.  There are palm trees fringing the boulevard, and spectacular mountain views.  There are many magnificent buildings lining the boulevard and it is definitely worth walking along the whole length of it.

Chateau de Pau

The Chateau in Pau is the birthplace of Henry IV and was also used as a holiday home by Napoleon during his time in power.  It has been designated as a national historical monument and has an impressive collection of tapestries within its walls.  Guided tours of the Chateau are available, running approximately every 15 minutes.  Entrance to the Chateau is free on the first Sunday of every month.

Funiculaire de Pau

The funicular railway in Pau runs between the city centre and the main railway station, which is located in the valley below the city.  The funicular is a free service.

Pyrenees National Park

The Pyrenees National Park is situated close to Pau and is a beautiful natural expanse.  There are numerous hiking and walking trails, including in the Aspe Pass and the Ossau Valley. Other activities include bird watching and mountain climbing.

Vineyards

There are many vineyards close to Pau, to both the North and the South of the town.  To the South of Pau, there are Jurancon vineyards and to the north, wines produced include the Madiran and Pacherenc. 

How to get there

Ryanair are the only airline to operate direct flights to Pau Airport from the UK.  They fly to Pau from London Stansted and from Bristol.  Ryanair also offer flights to Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrenees Airport, which is around 35 miles from Pau.  Flights are available to the Airport from London Stansted.
