Nice, the fifth largest city in France, is one of the French Riveira’s most popular tourist destinations. It has a wonderful climate, which usually sees only one or two days of rain during the summer months. Nice has excellent transport connections, allowing visitors to explore all along the Cote d’Azur, as well as further afield, including to Corsica by ferry.
Top Attractions
Vieux Nice
Vieux Nice is the old town area of Nice. Its small, winding streets are packed with restaurants and bars. The area is best explored on foot.
One of the major attractions in Vieux Nice is the Cours Salaya Flower Market, which is a working market as well as being home to many cafes and souvenier shops.
Promenade des Anglais
The palm tree-lined Promenade des Anglais which runs for 5km along the coastline of Nice. Built in the 19th century, it is a very popular attraction in the city, with walkers able to admire amazing architecture and stunning views. The famous Hotel Negresco is situated on the Promenade des Anglais.
Beaches
Nice is blessed with a beautiful coastline, but travellers expecting to relax on long sandy beaches will be disappointed as the beaches of Nice are pebbly beaches.
The sea is very pleasant for swimming, but the depth of the water increases rapidly and there are many strong currents. A popular beach for children and less strong swimmers is that at Villefranche, a short distance from Nice and easily accessible by train.
Carnaval
Nice is justifiably famous for its Carnaval, which is held every winter and lasts for a fortnight. Festivities include parades, music and masquerade balls. Most events are free, but there is a charge for attendance at some of the parades, including the Parade of Lights.
Day Trips from Nice
Monte Carlo, in the Principality of Monaco, is approximately a 30 minute train ride from Nice and this playground of the rich and famous is well worth a visit. The town of Cannes, famous for its film festival, is also close by on the Cote d’Azur.
Getting There
Nice is served by the Nice-Cote d’Azur airport, which is situated at one end of the Promenade des Anglais. Shuttle buses run between the airport and the centre of Nice. Air France and British Airways both fly regularly from London to Nice, while bmi offer flights from Birmingham and East Midlands Airports. Easyjet fly to Nice from many regional airports, including London Luton, Bristol, Liverpool, Newcastle and Edinburgh.
