Nantes is situated around 30 miles inland from France’s Atlantic coast. It is the capital of the Pays de la Loire Region and also of the Loire-Atlantique Department. The climate in Nantes can be cool, with milder summers than those experienced by resorts on France’s Mediterranean coastline. A popular way to see everything that Nantes has to offer is to hire a bicycle and take a leisurely ride around the city.
Top Attractions
Chateau des ducs de Bretagne
The Chateau of the Dukes of Brittany is an impressive building which is listed in France as a National Monument. A walk around the ramparts offers excellent views across Nantes and of the interior buildings of the Castle. There are pretty Moat Gardens, and a walk through these offers a pleasant way to see the grounds.
The Nantes History Museum is housed within the Castle, and is well worth exploring for visitors interested in the history of Nantes and Brittany.
Passage Pommeraye
Passage Pommeraye is a spectacular shopping mall, which links rue Crebillon and rue de la Fosse. Built in the 1840’s, it has several levels of shops and an impressive glass ceiling
Cathedral
The Cathedral in Nantes was built at a later time than many of the other cathedrals in France, with building work commencing in the 15th Century. The Cathedral was not completed, however, until the 19th Century. The Cathedral is open to the public, including the crypt, which now houses a small museum. Entry to the Cathedral is free.
Museums
One of the most famous residents of Nantes, was Jules Verne, who wrote Around the World in 80 Days. There is now a museum dedicated to his life and work, which as well as being full of interesting information, has a wonderful location with views around Nantes.
Other museums in Nantes include the Musee des Beaux-Arts de Nantes (Fine Arts Museum) and a Natural History Museum.
Beaches
There are many sandy beaches within a short drive or train ride of Nantes. One of the most popular is the resort of La Baule, where there is a sandy beach that is around 5 miles long. An alternative beach is that at Pornic, which is slightly closer to Nantes.
How to get there
Nantes-Atlantique Airport is situated around 5 miles south of the city of Nantes. Ryanair and British Airways offer flights from the UK to Nantes, while Air France offer flights via Paris.
