Top Attractions
Place de la Comedie
The Place de la Comedie is the central focus of the city of Montpellier. Sights in the Place de la Comedie include the fountain of the Three Graces and beautiful buildings dating from around the 19th century. Street entertainment is common in the square, which is named after a theatre which originally stood in that location.
Botanical Gardens
The Jardin des plantes de Montepellier are one of the oldest botanical gardens in Europe, being created in the late 16th century by Henri IV. A walk around the gardens is a very relaxing way to spend time in Montpellier, and they are classified as a French national monument.
Montpellier Zoo
Montpellier Zoo is located to the north of the city and is home to in excess of 500 animals. There are various attractions including an Amazonian Greenhouse and a small animal farm, where children can get close to the animals. The zoo is open daily.
Beach
La Grande Motte is one of the most popular beaches close to Montpellier. The resort has all the amenities required, including bars, restaurants and children’s activities, as well as tennis courts, sailing and an equestrian centre.
One of the closest beaches to Montpellier is Le Petit Travers, where restaurants are open during the summer months.
Other beaches in the Montpellier area include Palavas, Espiguette and La Grand Travers.
Cathedral
The Saint Pierre Cathedral dates from the 14th century and is a French national monument. It was originally a church attached to the local monastery, but was granted cathedral status in the 16th century.
How to get there
Flights to Montpellier are available direct from the UK with Ryanair and Easyjet. Easyjet fly from London Gatwick, while Ryanair offer flights from London Stansted and Bristol airports. Air France offer flights to the UK, travelling via Paris.
