Where?

Menorca (or Minorca) is the second largest of the Balearic Islands.  It is very close to the largest Balearic Island of Majorca, and a ferry runs between the two.  The island is approximately 9 miles wide and is very popular with tourists looking to relax on the beach.  The island has a rugged north coast, with most beaches on the south coast of the island.  Hiring a car is a popular way to see all that the island has to offer.

Beaches

A majority of the tourists flocking to Menorca are attracted by its beautiful beaches, of which there are around 100.  Some are long, sandy beaches and others are hidden coves.  Water sports are available at the larger beaches.  Some of the best include:

Son Bou – This is one of the longest beaches on the island, with a length of around 3 kilometres.  The beach, with its golden sands, is situated within walking distance of the local resort, which offers bars, restaurants and shopping facilities. 

Cala Galdana – Cala Galdana is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, set in a wonderful bay backed by pine trees.  There are plenty of tourist facilities, with beach bars and water sports available. 

Cala Santandria –  Cala Santandria is a resort popular with families and is on the west coast of the island.  It is approximately a kilometre from the additional facilities at Cala Blanca.  The resort has a good selection of bars and restaurants.  

Other beaches include Punta Prima (with plentiful watersports but a strong current), Cala Blanca, Cala En Porter and Santo Tomas.

Mount Toro

Mount Toro is the highest point in Menorca, and one of the few high points on the island.  Accordingly, it offers fantastic views across the whole island, and on a clear day, of Majorca as well. 

Ciutadella

The ancient Roman city of Ciutadella is worth a visit for those visitors who are looking for a city break or some time away from the beach.    The Cathedral, built in the 14th century, is worth a visit, as are the pretty cafes around the harbour.  A ferry leaves for Majorca daily from Ciutadella.

Mahon

Mahon is the capital city of Menorca, and is situated on a beautiful natural harbour.  There are many historical buildings to admire, including the Arch de San Roque.  The port is still bustles with activity and there are numerous pavement cafes from which to relax and enjoy the view. 

How to get there

Flights are available to Menorca flying from various airports in the United Kingdom.  Easyjet fly from London Gatwick, Newcastle, Liverpool and Bristol to Mahon.  Flying time from London is approximately 2 hours.  Other airlines offering flights include Iberia and Monarch Airlines, who fly from Birmingham International, London Gatwick, London Luton and Manchester.
