Where? Malaga is often known as the capital of the Costa del Sol on Spain’s Mediterranean coast. It is a port city, and is where most travellers will fly to if travelling to the beaches of the Costa del Sol. The city offers an interesting mix of historical and beach attractions, making it a popular choice for people looking for weekend breaks in the sun or longer holidays. The official currency in Spain is the euro.

Alcazba
The Alcazba is a Moorish fortification that dates back to around the 11th century. There is an archaeological museum within the castle. Inside the Alcazba there are beautiful gardens and magnificent harbour and city views. Next to the Alcazba is a Roman amphitheatre which has been well preserved.
Picasso Museum
Malaga is the birthplace of Picasso and this museum is dedicated to Housed in the Palacio de Buenavista in the centre of the city, the museum houses many of Picasso’s works. Casa Natal, or Picasso’s birthplace, is also in the city and open to the public.
Malaga Summer Fair
Every August, Malaga hosts a summer fair (Malaga Feria), celebrating the end of the siege of the city by Ferdinand and Isabella in 1487. The ten day long celebration features flamenco dancing and fireworks. The best view of the fireworks is from a boat out on the harbour. A huge fair ground operates in evenings during the fair.
Tourist Bus
A hop on hop off tourist bus operates in Malaga which offers an easy way to see all the sights. The full tour takes around an hour and a half, but the ticket is valid for 24 hours. Multilingual commentary is available through headphones.
Beaches
Malaga is well positioned on the Costa del Sol to offer visitors a wide choice of beaches. One of the largest beaches in Malaga is La Malagueta. La Malagueta is approximately ten minutes from the centre of Malaga and is accessible by public transport. There are restaurants and bars at the beach, which is patrolled by lifeguards. Playa Las Acacias is a very popular beach which also has good facilities. Other beaches in Malaga include Playa Huellin and Playa Polo.
Nightlife
Malaga has an enviable selection of restaurants and bars. There are numerous tapas bars which are open until very late at night, with some locals going out for the evening around midnight. Other evening entertainments include flamenco performances and more traditional nightclubs.
Cheap Flights to Malaga
Many airlines fly to Malaga from across the United Kingdom. British Airways and bmi offer flights from London, with Jet2 flying from airports including Manchester, Leeds Bradford and Newcastle.
