Where?
Madeira is an archipelago of islands in the Atlantic Ocean. Despite being close to the North African Coast, Madeira is actually part of Portugal. The archipelago is made up of Madeira Island, Porto Santo Island, Desertas Islands and Savage Islands.
Madeira Island is the largest and most populous, while Porto Santo is totally dedicated to tourism. Madeira Island is approximately 13 miles wide and has a mountain range running across the middle of it. The capital of Madeira is Funchal, and this pretty harbour city is on Madeira Island. With its mild winters and warm summers, Madeira is a wonderful year round resort. It offers beaches, mountains and a historical city, to cater to the tastes of a wide range of travellers. The currency in Madeira is the euro.

Madeira Theme Park
Madeira Theme Park showcases the history of the Madeira Island Archipelago. It is a huge park, covering around 145,000 square metres. The park is based around four pavilions – the Fantastic Journey, Future of the Earth, Discovery of the Islands and World of Islands. The Park offers free admission to children under 5 years of age, and is closed on Mondays.
Cable Cars
There are several cable cars running in Madeira, with the major one being from Funchal to the city of Monte. A recent addition is a new cable car from the Botanical Gardens up to Monte.
Golf
Madeira is becoming a very popular destination for golf, due to its pleasant climate, making it possible to play golf all year around. There are courses on Madeira Island and Porto Santo.
Christmas and New Year’s Eve Celebrations
Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations are very impressive in Madeira, with a massive fireworks display marking the advent of the New Year.
Beaches
The beaches on Madeira Island are mainly pebbled, so the most popular place to swim is at the Lido swimming pool in Funchal. This is popular with locals and tourists and offers many facilities including sun beds, parasols, cafes and table tennis.
The best beach is on the island of Porto Santo and is a 9km sandy beach. The sand reputedly has therapeutic benefits for sufferers of rheumatic and arthritic diseases. Although it is one long sandy beach, it is officially several small beaches, including Praia do Penedo and Praia da Fontinha.
How to get there
The major airport in Madeira is at Funchal. There are many flights from Lisbon and Porto, but there are also direct flights from the UK. Easyjet fly from several airports, including Bristol, London Stansted and London Gatwick. First Choice and Thomas Cook also offer flights from regional airports. TAP Air Portugal fly to Funchal from London. Flight time from London is around 3 hours.
Porto Santo can be reached by air from Funchal, with a flying time of around 15 minutes, or by ferry. Flights are also available from Lisbon with TAP Air Portugal.
