Lyon is a beautiful city in the Rhone-Alpes region of France, and its old town area is a UNESCO world heritage listed site. It is one of the largest urban areas in France, with only Paris being larger. It has a long and distinguished history, and was formerly known as the silk capital of the world.
Top Attractions
Vieux Lyon
Vieux Lyon is the Old Town part of the city, and is world heritage listed. It is built on the banks of the River Saone, on the Fouviere hillside. Impressive religious buildings dominate Vieux Lyon, including the Saint Jean Cathedral, Saint Georges Church and Saint Paul’s Church. Guided tours are available.
Place Bellecour
The Place Bellecour is one of the central points of the city of Lyon. It is a vast area that is one of the largest open spaces (with no greenery etc) in Europe. The Place Bellecour links the main shopping areas of Lyon and is dominated by a statue of Louis XIV. The Tourist Information Office is also situated in the Place Bellecour.
Tete d’Or Park
The Tete d’Or Park is one the largest parks to be found in a city in France. It has wonderful botanical gardens, a rose garden and a zoo. Entry to the zoo is free, and is home to around 1,000 animals. The park is popular with joggers, cyclists and everyone who enjoys being in the great outdoors.
Croix Rousse
The Croix Rousse area of Lyon is also part of the world heritage site and was originally home to silk weavers. It was built on steep hillsides, and one of its main attractions are the Traboule, narrow passages that run between the buildings. The Marche de la Croix Rousse is held every day except Monday, and is very well attended by locals and visitors alike.
Amphitheatre des Trois Gaules
The Amphitheatre of the Three Gauls is an impressive Roman amphitheatre which is around 2,000 years old, and is where Christians were thrown to the lions. It is not open to the public, but can be viewed from close by. The Amphitheatre is situated in the Croix Rousse area of the city.
How to get there
Lyon Saint-Exupery Airport is the main airport in Lyon, and it is located around 12 miles from the city. Airlines flying to Lyon from the UK include British Airways and bmi. Bmi fly to Lyon from Manchester. Easyjet also offer flights to Lyon, flying from London Gatwick and London Stansted. A regular shuttle bus operates between the airport and the city, stopping at the main train station in Lyon.
