Limoges is situated in the Limousin region of France. The city is built on the Vienne River and is most well known for being the home of Limoges Porcelain, although oak barrels for cognac production are also a major industry in the area. Limoges has an old quarter, where streets are narrow and many houses are half-timbered, as well as a newer section. There are many sporting activities for visitors in and around Limoges, many taking advantage of its lakes and waterways.

Porcelain
Limoges Porcelain is one of the most famous types of French porcelain. The name refers to porcelain made at factories around the Limoges area, and it is a hard-paste porcelain that is very collectable. The porcelain is still made today, and one of the companies still manufacturing it are Haviland.
Many of the factories have small museums showcasing their porcelain. Additionally, the Musee Municipal de l’Eveche and the Musee National de la Porcelaine Adrien Dubouche have good porcelain collections. The Musee National de la Porcelaine Adrien Dubouche also offers workshops to those who are interested, but visitors should note that it is closed on Tuesdays.
Cathedral
The Cathedral of Saint-Etienne is a prominent building in the city of Limoges. It has a wonderful bell tower, which is partly octagonal. The rood screen in the Cathedral is also a fine example of renaissance work.
Aquarium
The Aquarium du Limousin is situated in Limoges, close to the Town Hall. Visitors can marvel at a large variety of species. The Aquarium is open all year, apart from between Christmas and New Year.
Oradour-sur-Glane
Oradour-sur-Glane is a village close to Limoges that was totally destroyed by the Nazis during the Second World War. A new village has been built close by, but the destroyed village has been preserved, with abandoned cars and burnt out buildings left exactly as they were as a memorial to the lost villagers.

There is an airport at Limoges, to which direct flights are available from the UK. The airport is around 8 miles from the city, and there are taxis available at the airport for the journey. Ryanair fly to Limoges from various UK airports including Bournemouth, Bristol, East Midlands Airport, Edinburgh and London Luton. Flybe also offer flights to Limoges from Southampton and Newcastle.
