Lille is a town in the north east of France, very close to the border with Belgium. The city has both French and Belgian influences, including a wide choice of Belgian beers at its bars and restaurants. In 2004, it was the European City of Culture. Lille is popular with British visitors as it is one of the destinations on the Eurostar.
Grand Place
The Grand Place, also known as the Place du General-de-Gaulle, is at the heart of Lille. The square contains many good restaurants and cafes, and is a popular meeting spot for visitors and locals alike. At its centre is an impressive fountain and the square itself is surrounded by wonderful architecture.
The old town of Lille has beautiful cobbled streets and many traditional houses. The Rue de la Monnaie is the oldest street in Lille. The Cathedrale Notre Dame de la Treille is also situated in the old town of Lille. There are many small antique shops and clothing boutiques.
Lille holds a famous Christmas Market every year, running in November and December. The market is the largest Christmas market in the north of France and is held in the Place Rihour. There are concerts, funfairs, Father Christmas and, obviously, stalls selling all sorts of exciting goods. On the Saturday before Christmas, Father Christmas falls down from the Belfry of the Chamber of Commerce.
There are many interesting museums in Lille, including the Musee de l’Hospice Comtesse and the Natural History Museum. There is also an excellent Fine Arts Museum, which is closed on Tuesdays and is free on the first Sunday of every month. Paintings on display include works by Monet and Renoir. For visitors interested in Charles de Gaulle, it is possible to visit the house where he grew up, which is a museum detailing his life.
How to get there
Lille is connected to London by the Eurostar train, being on the route between London and the Belgian city of Brussels. The trains arrive at Lille-Europe station. There is also an airport just outside Lille, which provides connections from other French cities. Visitors may also fly into Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, and then connect by train to Lille. Airlines flying to Charles de Gaulle Airport include British Airways, bmi and Air France
