Funchal is the capital city of Madeira and is on Madiera Island.  Other islands making up the Madeira Archipelago are Porto Santo, Savage Islands and Desertas Islands.   Madeira is ruled by the Portugese, but is closer to the North African coast than to Portugal.  The island has a mountain range running across it, giving dramatic peaks in the centre of the island and lush vegetation by the water.  The currency used in Madeira is the euro. The mild climate makes Funchal popular all year around.

Attractions

Historical City

Funchal has three main historical areas, called Sao Pedro, Santa Maria and Se.  The city was part of the sugar trade in the 15th and 16th centuries and much of the city was built during that time.  Old street patterns and convents remain in the historical parts of the city.

Monte

The hill town of Monte sits high above Funchal.  There are beautiful old palaces and also the Monte Palace Tropical Garden which is a very popular attraction.  A unique experience in Funchal is to hire a wickerwork sledge to descend from the hilltop city of Monte to Funchal, on the harbourside.  These are on wooden runners and are pushed down to Funchal by two people.

Cable Car

A cable car connects Funchal to Monte, offering fantastic views over the harbour.  The cable car can be boarded at Almirante Reis and takes around 15 minutes to climb the 2,000 feet to Monte.

Madeira Magic

For families travelling to Funchal, Madeira Magic (Kid’s City) is a popular attraction. There are many things to see and do, including a Planetairum, gardens, restaurant and tearoom. Madeira Magic is closed on Mondays, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Flights to Funchal are available with several airlines from the UK.  One of the major providers is TAP Air Portugal, who fly directly from London Gatwick.  Easyjet also fly to Funchal from airports including London Stansted, Bristol and London Gatwick.  Other operators offering flights to Funchal include Thomas Cook Airlines and First Choice.  The duration of a flight from London to Funchal is approximately three hours.
