Fuerteventura is one of the Canary Islands, situated just off the coast of Africa. Much of the island is desert like, with a very dry climate and barren landscapes. As with the other Canary Islands, Fuerteventura is popular due to its consistently good weather and sandy beaches. The island appeals to a wide range of people including families, 18-30s and older people. For those of us who like to keep ourselves busy on holidays, there are plenty of activities to get involved with in Fuerteventura, including; windsurfing, scuba diving, fishing and walking. Corralejo is the party district of Fuerteventura, with a plethora of nightclubs and pubs along the main strip. Accommodation is plentiful in Fuerteventura, the main resorts are: Morro Jable, Corralejo, Costa Caleta and Costa Calma where a multitude of hotels and apartments are located.
Fuerteventura Attractions
Puerto del Rosario
Puerto del Rosario is the capital of Fuerteventura. Puerto del Rosario has not really catered to tourists in the past but that has changed. The government have invested heavily in re-generating the area, including sprucing up the beaches, in an effort to attract more tourists to the capital. Puerto del Rosario is easily accessibly by bus from the main resorts.
Theme Parks
There are a number of theme parks in Fuerteventura which are popular with kids and adults. Theme parks include: Baku Water Park in Corralejo, is not just a water park it also has ten pin bowling a golf range and restaurants
American Star Shipwreck
The American Star Shipwreck is located at Playa de Garcey, on the west coast of Fuerteventura. The ship was formerly a cruise liner and ran aground in 1994 in inclement weather. American Star has actually been de-commissioned and was on its way to Thailand to be re-incarnated as a floating hotel. The wreck is an interesting site to say the least.
Betancuria
Betancuria is the former capital of Fuerteventura and is located in the north of the island. The town was of strategic importance in years gone by, to keep potential invaders out. There are many churches and museums to be enjoyed in Betancuria, along with other historical attractions.
La Lajita Zoo
La Lajita Zoo is quite a small zoo situated on the east side of Fuerteventura. Although small, La Lajita Zoo is a very popular tourist attraction. Tourists are drawn to the zoo for its parrot shows and camel safaris.
How to get there - Cheap Fuerteventura Flights
Fuerteventura Airport (FUE) is located near the island’s capital Puerto del Rosario. Ryanair, bmi, Thomas Cook Airlines and Thomson operate flights from the UK to Fuerteventura.
