The Costa Brava is in Cataloniain Spain, in the province of Girona. It is a popular holiday destination for visitors from the United Kingdom, with its combination of large resorts and small, less developed coastal villages. There are many beautiful beaches, many of which have been awarded Blue Flags.
Attractions
Lloret de Mar
Lloret de Mar is one of the largest resorts on the Costa Brava. There are numerous bars and restaurants, and large beaches including Lloret de Mar Beach. Its proximity to Barcelona means that many visitors make time for a day trip to the city to see all that it has to offer, including the Sagrada Familia.
Other Resorts
Calella - Calella has a beautiful sandy beach, which is very popular with families visiting the area.
Playa d’Aro – Playa d’Aro has a number of beaches, with the main one being Platja Gran. It is well linked by public transport to other resorts on the Costa Brava.
Estartit – Estartit has a lot to offer visitors, with watersports very popular in the resort. Boat trips are available to the Medes Islands and there are many opportunities to scuba dive.
Theme Parks
There are several theme parks on the Costa Brava, with Waterworld being in Lloret de Mar. One of Europe’s largest water parks, this is well worth a visit and has slides, pools and mini golf as well as restaurants and other facilities.
Marineland is also close to Lloret de Mar, and a free bus operates between the resort and the park. Major attractions at Marineland include dolphins and sea lions, as well as a water park to relax in afterwards.
Walking/Hiking
The Costa Brava has many mountains and beautiful natural areas to explore, and many people choose to holiday there because of this. There are also beautiful cliff top walks along the coast. The National Park De L’Emporda is on the Costa Brava and is particularly popular with walkers and bird watchers.
How to get there
There are two major airports serving the Costa Brava, with one at Girona and one at Barcelona. Airlines such as British Airways and Iberia fly from the UK to Barcelona, as well as low cost providers such as Easyjet. Flights to Girona are available with Thomas Cook Airlines and Ryanair. Thomsonfly fly from Manchester to Girona.
