Coimbra has a fascinating past, having once been the Portugese capital and the birthplace of numerous Portuguese kings. Coimbra is also home to one of the world’s oldest universities, The University of Coimbra, founded in 1290. Coimbra has some very well preserved examples of Roman architecture. Coimbra has many pretty parks, the most well known of these is the Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra. Because of its proximity to Porto and Lisbon, either Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport (OPO) or Portela Airport can be used to get to Coimbra. Easyjet and Ryanair operate services from the UK to Porto and British Airways and TAP Portugal operate services to Portela Airport.
