Chamonix is in the Savoie department of France and lies at the foot of Mont Blanc. The resort makes a wonderful year-round destination, with the beautiful valley and mountains offering a wide variety of activities depending on the time of year.
Winter in Chamonix
Chamonix is a ski resort which offers something for ski-ers of all abilities. For beginners and families, the most popular areas are La Vormaine, Les Chosalet, Le Savoy and Les Pianards. The higher altitude ski fields are Balme, Brevent-Flegere, Telecabine du Prarion and Les Grands Montets. Ski-ers on the Valle Blance are advised that a guide is recommended. There are numerous ski schools to choose from in Chamonix, including the Ecole de Ski Francais de Chamonix.
Other winter activities in Chamonix include ice climbing, cross country ski-ing, snow-shoeing and helicopter flights along the Chamonix Valley.
A comprehensive system of lifts and cable cars makes it easy to get around the resort. A free bus service called the Mulets bus runs around the centre of Chamonix all year, running approximately every 20 minutes during the daytime.
Summer in Chamonix
Outdoor activities are very popular in Chamonix during the summer months. One of the most popular is hiking in the beautiful surroundings. For experienced walkers, the Mont Blanc Tour is a 250 kilometre walk that includes Chamonix. Other summer sports include paragliding, tennis, golf and skating at the ice rink.
The Mer de Glace glacier, one of the largest glaciers in France, can be reached via a small railway from Chamonix, and offers spectacular views of the area. There is also an ice grotto which is worth exploring.
A tourist train runs around Chamonix, offering a guided tour of the highlights of the town. The cable cars running up to Aiguille du Midi are also popular as they offer wonderful views of mountains including Mont Blanc, Mont Tacul and Mont Macudit.
Getting there
The nearest airport to Chamonix is at Geneva, and is around 70 miles away. There is a coach transfer service operating between Geneva and Chamonix. Many airlines operate flights to Geneva from the UK, including British Airways, Easyjet and Swiss International Airlines.
The airport at Lyon is also close to Chamonix, and is connected to Chamonix by rail. British Airways, bmi and Easyjet all fly to Lyon from the UK.
