The Canary Islands are a group of 7 main islands situated in the Atlantic Ocean, just off the coast of Africa and are territory of Spain. The islands are all of volcanic origin and this is evident from the landscapes on some parts of the islands, sometimes referred to as being Martian, although each island has its own diverse landscape. There are also mountain ranges that have been formed by past volcanic activity. The islands are very popular with tourists, with millions visiting (mainly European) every year. The Canaries are popular mainly because of the islands consistent weather (although each island has different weather patterns) and sandy beaches. The Canary Islands attract quite a diverse, crowd of tourists, young, old, singles, couples, families etc
Tenerife
Tenerife is perhaps the busiest of the Canary Islands, in terms of tourism. The island is one of the most diverse in the archipelago, with cliffs that fall away into the ocean, green hills and beautiful beaches. Tenerife is also very popular with the 18-30s demographic, for its bustling nightlife. The main resort towns in Tenerife are Playa de las Americasand Los Cristianos and this is where most of the accommodation options are located.
Gran Canaria
The southern part of Gran Canaria tends to be more popular with tourists as it’s sunnier with less rainfall than the north of the island. Maspalomas is one of the most popular attractions in Gran Canaria, with its expansive sandy beaches and sweeping dunes. Gran Canaria has some great nightlife, with a multitude of bars, nightclubs and restaurants centred around the busy resort town of Playa Del Ingles.
Fuerteventura Fuerteventura has a very dry climate with barren landscapes. The main resorts on the island are: Morro Jable, Corralejo, Costa Caleta and Costa Calma all offering a wide range of accommodation options. Some sights to see in Fuerteventura include, The American Star Shipwreck, La Lajita Zoo and the historic town of Betancuria . La Palma
La Palma is an island of spectacular natural beauty, with volcanoes, mountains and rolling hills. La Palma is of great importance to astronomers, with many observatories situated on the island, the most well known being Roque de los Muchachos. Caldera de Taburiente is a massive crater on La Palma and is the remnant of an extinct volcano, this breathtaking site is well worth a visit. The island’s capital, Santa Cruz is charming and relatively unspoilt, with stunning architecture and old cobbled streets. Lanzarote Lanzarote is the furthest east of the Canary Islands. Lanzarote is one of the most popular of the Canaries and has some fabulous sights and attractions to experience, including the Timanfaya National Park and Puerto del Rosario. Getting there All of the main islands have international airports. Easyjet, BMI, Monarch Airlines, Thomson and Thomas Cook all operate regular services from the UK to the Canary Islands.
