Brest is in the Finistere department of France. It is a town built around a harbour and is an important port. The town was almost destroyed during the Second World War, but has been rebuilt since then and is a popular destination for visitors from the UK.
Top Attractions
Oceanopolis
Oceanopolis offers visitors the opportunity to explore the world’s oceans. It is divided into three pavilions, which are the Temperate Pavilion, the Polar Pavilion and the Tropical Pavilion. Highlights of the Pavilions include a large penguin pool, jellyfish, sharks, a mangrove swamp, and watching divers feed the many different species of fish. During the summer months, Oceanopolis is open every day, and entrance is free for children under 4 years old.
Brest Fortress Memorial
The Brest Fortress Memorial details the history of the Finestre area of France during World War Two. Attractions include the soldiers quarters, the Artillery workshop, the bunker and the roll of honour. There are regular exhibitions displayed at the Memorial. The Memorial is closed at weekends, and entrance is free for children under 9 years old.
Tanguy Tower
The Tanguy Tower showcases the history of Brest, giving an insight into what the town was like before 1939. Admission is free and visitors should allow around one hour to fully appreciate the museum.
Castle
The Castle in Brest if located at the mouth of the River Penfeld and is a French historical monument dating from the 15th Century. There are wonderful views across the harbour from its ramparts.
Musee National de la Marine
The Chateau de Brest contains the Musee National de la Marine, which contains a large collection of model ships and paintings. The museum is open daily during the summer months and entrance is free for under 18’s.
Outdoor Activities
There are many outdoor activities to undertake in Brest, including cruises around the harbour and port. Cruises are also available to the islands of Ouessant, Molene and Sein. Other watersports available include rowing, windsurfing and scuba diving.
The Keroual Forest offers opportunities for walking, hiking and orienteering. There is also a very good children’s play area.
How to get there
Brest Bretagne Airport is close to the town of Brest, and is served by both Ryanair and Flybe from the United Kingdom. Flybe offer flights from Birmingham, Southampton and Exeter, while Ryanair offer flights from London Luton.
