Sitting on the bank of the Garonne River in the French region of Aquitaine is the city of Bordeaux.  The thing that comes to most people’s minds when Bordeaux is mentioned, is the outstanding wines that are produced here.  There is however some much more to this beautiful city, including fine architecture and great shopping.

Golden Triangle

A visit to Bordeaux would not be complete without a stroll around the pictureque Golden Triangle.  The Golden Triangle is an area which falls between the streets Cours Georges Clemenceau, Cours de l’Intendance and Allées de Tourny.  You can either go it alone or join one of the organised walking tours around Bordeaux.  Either way, you will be greeted with lovely architecture and some great shops, ranging from small speciality stores to big chains, so there’s something for everyone.

Wine Tours

Bordeaux is universally known for its fine wines and any trip to Bordeaux would not be complete without a visit to some of the local vineyards.  St Emilion is close to Bordeaux, being situated a short distance to the east of the town.  St Emilion is a world heritage listed area.  Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are two of the wines produced in the area.

Wine School

For visitors who really wish to increase their knowledge of wine, the Ecole du Vin is the wine school in Bordeaux.  Two hour courses are run on several days of the week, between May and October.

Museums

There are many good museums in Bordeaux.  These include the Museum of Fine Arts, the Natural History Museum, the Museum of Decorative Arts and the Museum of Contemporary Arts.  The Museum of Aquitaine gives a very interesting history of Bordeaux and the surrounding region.

Le Palais Rohan

The Palais Rohan is situated in the centre of the old part of Bordeaux.  Built in the 18th Century, it is an impressive building that currently houses a museum of fine arts.

Bordeaux Airport is served by several airlines flying from the UK, including British Airways.  Easyjet offer flights from Bristol, Liverpool and London Luton, while bmibaby fly from Manchester and Birmingham.  Flybe also offer flights to Bordeaux from the UK, flying between Southampton and Bordeaux.
