Angouleme was built on the River Charente, and the pretty city is capital of the region of Charente. Angouleme is known for being the home of paper making, an industry that was successful due to Angouleme’s riverside location.  Angouleme was occupied by the Germans during the Second World War, and was the scene of much activity by the French Resistance.

Cathedral

The Cathedral of St Pierre is the most impressive building in Angouleme and dates from the 11th and 12th centuries, although it has undergone extensive renovations over the years.  The Cathedral has a beautiful interior, including a four-domed ceiling, and a facade commemorating the Ascension and the Last Supper.

Promenade des Remparts

A legacy of Angouleme’s past are the Ramparts which run around the city.  A walk around them offers amazing views across the historic areas of Angouleme.  Angouleme’s position atop a hill, means that stunning views are also available of the countryside for miles around.

Musee des Beaux-Arts

The Musee des Beaux-Arts is housed in the former Bishop’s Palace in Angouleme.  It has an impressive collection of art and archaeological displays from around the local area and worldwide. 

International Comics Festival

The Angouleme Comics Festival is held annually around the end of January/early February.  Shows and exhibitions are held around Angouleme and the festival lasts for four days. Tickets can be purchased online or by telephone. 

For those with a love of comedy, a visit to Angouleme’s comedy museum is also recommended.

La Rochefoucauld

Situated around 18 miles east of Angouleme is the impressive Chateau of La Rochefoucauld.  It has a stunning location on the River Tardoire.  Although still occupied as a home, there are many rooms open to the public. 

How to get there

Ryanair fly to Angouleme Airport from London Stansted several times per week during the summer months.  The airport is located approximately six miles to the north of the city of Angouleme.
